Journal prompt: what you want in life

This writing exercise is designed to help you get to know yourself better.

One thing that is really important to know about yourself is what you want.

The reason it’s so important is that when you know what you want, your actions become aligned with that purpose. Every piece, every little step is towards that goal.

If your goal is merely to be a better writer. That is a great goal, but it doesn’t have quite the same direction as it might if you could say, I want to be a better writer in order to ….

Be specific as you can. Be as clear as you can.

Take time to write honestly and openly with yourself. If you can’t manage to be honest with yourself, who will you be honest with?

Here are a few questions to consider:

What do you want to do in life?

What are you biggest goals and dreams?

What type of lifestyle you want for yourself?

Get to know yourself inside. No need to look outside yourself for what you want. Don’t reference a partner’s wishes or what your job needs from you. Think of your desires in life.

This is a great exercise to do yearly. Things change as we grow and get to know ourselves. We find ourselves in new situations and values are adjusted. What once seemed important isn’t anymore. If you want to think ahead, plan on keeping these writings together, so you can watch your evolution. You will learn much, and chances are good that you will look back and laugh at yourself.

Sometimes it takes time.

I am always impressed by people that know what they want and can focus a lifetime on that. Others of us need a lot of time. We see too many options and they both engage and distract us. It’s not a bad thing. Sometimes you need to look for the thread through all the options that appeal to you and see if there is something they all have in common.

I hope you learn something about yourself through this exercise!
